Semen analysis

The first step in the  investigation of male fertility is the semen analysis. The semen analysis provides useful information, such as, how many spermatozoa are in the sample, the way they move and how they are made.

Based on the result of the semen analysis the doctor will determine what is the best next step for the couple. Thus, in cases where the result of the semen analysis is good, the couple has good chances for fertility. In these cases, if there is no pregnancy soon, it is advisable to perform more tests that can give extra information on the fertilizing ability of a sample, for example the presence of microorganisms or the quality of the genetic material – the well known DNA.

In cases where the semen analysis has a small number of spermatozoa, impaired motility or morphology, a number of specialized tests are needed in order to determine what is the cause of the problem. The treating physician then, after collecting all the necessary information, will decide which is the appropriate treatment.
